WunderWhisper for macOS, and this website
Last updated: November 2026
Introduction
WunderWhisper is a macOS menu bar app for dictation (hold a key, talk, and your words are typed into any app) and, with Pro, meeting recording with transcripts and AI notes. This policy explains what the app does with your voice and text, and what this website collects.
Core Principle
WunderWhisper has no backend that receives your audio or text, no analytics, no telemetry and no accounts. Speech is recognised on your Mac. Your recordings and transcripts are files on your Mac. The few network connections the app makes are listed below.
Speech Recognition
- Speech recognition uses Apple's on-device speech model (SpeechAnalyzer). Audio is transcribed on your Mac and is never uploaded for transcription
- macOS downloads and manages the speech model for each language; WunderWhisper does not choose where it comes from
- Speaker labels in meetings come from an on-device model (FluidAudio) that runs after the meeting
AI Cleanup and Notes
On-Device AI (default)
- Dictated text and meeting transcripts are processed inside WunderWhisper on your Mac's GPU, using Apple's MLX framework
- No text leaves your computer
- The model is downloaded once from Hugging Face (huggingface.co) when you choose it; only the model files are downloaded, nothing about you or your text is sent
- The model is unloaded from memory after 5 minutes without use
Cloud AI (your choice, your key)
- If you choose OpenAI, OpenRouter, or a custom endpoint, the text to clean up or summarise is sent directly from your Mac to that provider over HTTPS. Audio is never sent.
- There is no intermediary server. WunderWhisper does not relay, proxy, or store the request or the response
- Requests are authenticated with your own API key, stored in the macOS Keychain
- The provider's own privacy policy and data retention apply to those requests
- Live answers (Pro, experimental, off by default) only work with a cloud provider. While on, recent transcript text and the notes you add are sent to that provider when the other side asks a question
Permissions
macOS asks for each of these the first time it is needed:
- Microphone: to transcribe what you say in dictation and meetings
- System Audio Recording: to record the sound of your calls in meetings (Pro). It does not need screen recording
- Accessibility: to type your dictation into the frontmost app and, after cleanup, to check that exactly the typed text is still there before replacing it
- Notifications: to tell you when a meeting has been processed, an update is waiting, or something went wrong
WunderWhisper listens only while you dictate or record a meeting. It never reads text from other apps except to check its own typing, and it never replaces text it cannot verify.
What Is Stored on Your Mac
| Data | Where | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Settings (shortcuts, language, provider, model) | UserDefaults | Remember your preferences |
| API keys for cloud providers | macOS Keychain (encrypted) | Authenticate with the provider you chose |
| Pro license key and this Mac's activation | macOS Keychain (encrypted) | Unlock Pro without a server |
| Meetings: audio, transcript, speaker turns, notes | ~/Library/Application Support/WunderWhisper/Meetings | Your meeting library |
| On-device AI models | ~/.cache/huggingface/hub | Run cleanup and notes offline |
| Speaker-label models | ~/Library/Application Support/FluidAudio/Models | Tell speakers apart after a meeting |
What Is NOT Collected
- No analytics or telemetry: no usage tracking, no feature counters, no behavioural data
- No crash reporting: no Sentry, no Firebase, no Crashlytics
- No accounts: no sign-up, login, or user profile
- No advertising: no ads, no ad SDKs, no advertising identifiers
- No transcript logging: the app's diagnostic logs never contain what you said or your API keys
- No system profile: the update check sends no information about your Mac
Network Connections
| Destination | Protocol | Purpose | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your chosen cloud AI provider | HTTPS | Clean up text, write notes, live answers | Only if you pick OpenAI, OpenRouter, or a custom endpoint |
| huggingface.co | HTTPS | Download an on-device AI model (no user data) | When you download a model, and the speaker-label models on the first meeting processed with speaker labels on |
| updates.wunderwhisper.com | HTTPS | Check for and download updates (no system profile) | Once a day, or when you choose Check for Updates |
| api.polar.sh | HTTPS | Activate, check, or deactivate a Pro license: the key and this Mac's name | Only after you enter a Pro license key |
WunderWhisper makes no other network connections of its own. macOS may download speech models for the language you choose; that is handled by the operating system.
Recording Other People
When you record a meeting, you record other people. Many countries require their consent. Tell the people on the call that you are recording, and follow the rules that apply to you.
